A recent, clear photo is part of your application
Your PAL photo must show your current appearance and meet the requirements for your application route. The RCMP specifies a photo less than twelve months old, with a clear front view and neutral expression. Online and paper applications need different file or submission preparation.
Arrange the image before you reach the upload or mailing step. A photo that looks acceptable on a small phone screen may still have the wrong size, file format or glare. Checking those details early gives you time to replace it without rushing the application.
The main specifications
| Detail | Online photo | Paper photo |
|---|---|---|
| Dimensions | 45 mm wide × 57 mm high | Follow the form’s maximum 45 mm × 57 mm size |
| Head size | At least 30 mm high | At least 30 mm high |
| File or print | JPG/JPEG, 200 KB to 6 MB, portrait | Photo-quality print, prepared with the form’s photo label |
| Timing | Less than twelve months old | Less than twelve months old |
The file-size limit is about the digital file, not how large the person looks in the picture. Ask the photographer for the digital file if applying online, and check the print dimensions if applying by mail.
Check the face, light and background
Use a plain light background, even lighting and a straight-on view that clearly shows your face and shoulders. Check the original image closely for shadows and reflections. Do not use a filter to change how you look or retouch an image to hide a lighting problem.
Prepare a quiet space for the photo review: open the original file, compare it with the current route’s specifications and note anything that needs another image. A dedicated photograph is easier to assess than a picture cropped from a holiday, a group photo or an identity document.
Keep the photo task and guarantor task together
A first adult application includes a photo-guarantor role. For a paper application, follow the current form’s instructions for the label and signature on the photo. The RCMP notes that a photo-guarantor signature is not required for a renewal photo.
Tell the photographer which application route you are using, then arrange the related guarantor details separately. The person taking the photograph is not automatically the person who can meet the guarantor requirements. Understand references and the photo guarantor →
Make a small photo folder
Keep the original digital file and a note of when the photo was taken. If you request a replacement, give it a clear filename so you do not accidentally upload the older version. For a paper application, keep the photo and label instructions with the rest of the mailing documents.
Avoid sending your image through several messaging services before submission if that makes it hard to identify the original file. Open the exact file you plan to submit and inspect its properties, rather than assuming the copy in a chat has the same format and quality.
Common photo questions
Can I use my passport photo?
A passport-type photograph can be a useful starting point, but check the PAL dimensions, timing and route requirements rather than assuming every passport print fits.
Can I use a scan of my ID photo?
Prepare a dedicated current photo. The adult application instructions say not to use a photograph of another photo or government identification.
What if the photo is rejected?
Follow the CFP’s request for a replacement. Review what failed before sending the same file again; a new submission can delay processing.
