05 / APPROVED INSTRUCTION

A good booking starts with the right questions.

Verify approval, compare the complete package and understand how the official results will be supplied.

01 / FIND AN INSTRUCTOR

What does “approved instructor” mean?

The course must be recognized for the Canadian firearms licensing process. An ordinary range lesson, a hunting workshop or an online preparation service is not automatically CFSC or CRFSC certification.

Start with the organization or CFO office listed for your province or territory. Ask it to confirm that the instructor is currently approved for the particular course you want. Someone approved for CFSC is not necessarily offering CRFSC.

Compare what the booking actually includes

Two advertisements can both say “PAL course” and still describe different packages. One may include the manual and all test administration; another may list teaching only and price the rest separately. Compare a written breakdown, not just the large price at the top.

Approval matters more than polished advertising. Verify the instructor through the appropriate provincial route, then check that the course offered is the one you need. Range coaching, hunter education and online preparation may be valuable, but they are not automatically approved CFSC or CRFSC certification.

Useful signs of a clear booking

  • The official course name is stated.
  • The approved instructor and location are identifiable.
  • The schedule includes the examination arrangements.
  • Fees, cancellations and result delivery are explained.

Your province or territory

Where to begin

Open your local instructor list or course calendar. Where training is arranged through the Chief Firearms Officer, use the regional contact entry to ask for instructors near you.

Ask these questions before paying

  1. Is this the right certification?

“Is this an approved CFSC? Do you also offer CRFSC, and can I take both back to back?”

  2. What is the full price?

“Are written and practical exams, materials and result paperwork included? What costs extra?”

  3. What is the full schedule?

“When do teaching and tests begin and finish? Is complete attendance required? What happens if I am late?”

  4. What support is available?

“Which language is taught? Can we arrange my accessibility or learning needs before the course?”

  5. What happens after assessment?

“When will I get the official results? What is the retest policy if I do not pass one part?”

05 / FIND AN INSTRUCTOR

What should I bring?

Get the provider’s instructions in writing. Ask about ID, registration confirmation, course materials, note-taking supplies and food or breaks. A minor may need parental consent.

The instructor provides the training equipment. Do not arrive with your own firearm or ammunition unless the approved provider has explicitly given lawful, course-specific instructions. Your job before class is to know where to arrive and what has been requested.

How to recognize a credible booking

  • The provider clearly names CFSC or CRFSC, the instructor and the location.
  • You can verify approval through the listed provincial route.
  • Teaching, examination, fees and refund terms are explained before payment.
  • They distinguish a course report from the government-issued PAL.
  • They do not guarantee licence approval or promise an online-only PAL.

Use a simple booking enquiry

AN EXAMPLE YOU CAN ADAPT

“I am a first-time learner looking for approved CFSC training.”

“Could you confirm the instructor’s approval, next available dates and total price? Does the price include the written and practical exams, materials and official result reports? What should I bring, and when are the tests scheduled?”

“If you offer CRFSC as well, how do you arrange it after CFSC? I would also like to discuss any language or accessibility arrangements before booking.”

This enquiry is deliberately about the booking, not sensitive eligibility history. If your question concerns the licensing decision, ask the CFP or CFO separately. Keep the provider’s answer so you can compare it with another course without relying on memory.

08 / FIND AN INSTRUCTOR

Check the details before paying

Can I pick an instructor solely by the lowest advertised price?

Compare the total package, approval and practical arrangements. A low headline price is not enough if you later discover additional exam fees or a schedule you cannot attend.

Does a nearby range automatically offer approved safety courses?

Not necessarily. Ask whether the booking is specifically approved CFSC or CRFSC and verify the instructor for that course.

What if the directory names an office rather than an instructor?

That office or organization is the route to current local providers. Ask it for approved instruction near your location and for the process used to verify a provider.
