01 / STORAGE & TRANSPORT

Storage and transport are different tasks

Storage is how the firearm is kept when not being used. Transport is moving it. Display has its own rules. The requirements depend on the legal class.

Core federal requirements for individuals
TaskNon-restrictedRestricted
StorageUnloaded, with a secure locking device or qualifying locked cabinet, container or room.Unloaded, with a secure locking device plus qualifying locked storage; alternatively, a qualifying safe, vault or secure room built for safe storage.
TransportUnloaded. Vehicle and unattended-vehicle rules also matter.Unloaded, secured with a locking device and inside a sturdy, non-transparent locked container. Applicable ATT / licence conditions also matter.
AmmunitionStored separately or locked; it may be in the same locked container.Stored separately or locked; it may be in the same locked container.

This comparison covers the core distinctions. Follow the full rules for your class, vehicle, display arrangement and particular circumstances.

02 / STORAGE & TRANSPORT

The same firearm, three different contexts

A common beginner mistake is to learn a storage sentence and assume it answers every situation. Ask what is happening first: is the firearm stored, being transported or being displayed? Then identify its legal class and the requirements for that context.

A licence answers whether the individual has the approved privileges. It does not replace the equipment, location or authorization requirements that apply to the firearm. Use the comparison as a map, then confirm the full conditions for your intended situation.

IN CONTEXT

Plan the trip as well as the destination

A lawful destination does not remove transport requirements. For restricted firearms, the journey must fit the applicable licence or ATT conditions as well as the packaging rules.

03 / STORAGE & TRANSPORT

What is an Authorization to Transport?

An ATT authorizes specified transport of restricted or prohibited firearms. It is not a general carry permit. A locked case alone does not authorize a trip.

Automatic licence conditions cover certain trips, including an approved range in the owner’s province of residence and the firearm’s storage location after purchase. Other destinations, such as repair, a gun show or a new address, may require a separate ATT from the CFO. Read your actual licence conditions and confirm the trip before travelling.

04 / STORAGE & TRANSPORT

If a firearm is left in a vehicle

The RCMP’s guidance calls for locking firearms in the trunk or a similar locked compartment. If no such compartment exists, place the firearm out of sight and lock the vehicle. Restricted firearms still require their transport packaging and authorization conditions.

Do not confuse a parked vehicle with a general substitute for compliant home storage. Additional rules apply to particular circumstances; plan the whole trip.

05 / STORAGE & TRANSPORT

Plan before your first acquisition

  • Confirm the exact firearm’s current legal class.
  • Read the relevant storage and transport requirements before choosing equipment.
  • Understand registration and transfer requirements.
  • For restricted firearms, confirm the licence and ATT conditions for your intended trips.
  • Ask the CFO about a situation you cannot confidently match to the rules.

06 / STORAGE & TRANSPORT

A useful way to think about an ATT

TRANSPORT PLANNING

An owner wants to take a restricted firearm for repair

They should not assume the automatic approved-range condition covers a repair appointment. They check their actual licence conditions and ask the CFO about the required ATT before travelling. They also plan the applicable unloaded, locking-device and container requirements.

CHECK YOUR UNDERSTANDINGDoes a sturdy locked case authorize any restricted-firearm journey?Reveal the explanation +

No. A case addresses part of the transport packaging requirement. The trip must also be authorized by the relevant licence conditions or ATT. Read both the context and the class requirements.

07 / STORAGE & TRANSPORT

Before relying on a storage or transport plan

Avoid treating the name of a product as proof of compliance. A “gun cabinet,” “travel case” or “safe” still needs to meet the applicable rule. If a setup or journey does not clearly fit the guidance, describe the actual arrangement to the appropriate authority and ask what is required.
