First, separate achievement from authorization
Passing is a meaningful milestone. Your course report shows you met the training requirement. It is not the PAL card and does not independently authorize possession.
You still need a licence application and government review. Use the waiting period to organize the next step, not to assume approval has already happened.
Make an application folder
Keep your official results, then gather the information for your chosen route. A first-time online applicant needs a digital licence photo, two government-issued IDs and an accepted payment card.
Set aside time to arrange references and a photo guarantor. These are different roles. Ask contacts before submitting, and make sure the information and email addresses are accurate.
Use the full application checklistYour history determines the route
If you previously held a Minor’s Licence, PAL, POL or FAC, the online first-time definition does not apply. A currently valid renewal is also a different process. Choose the route that fits your actual history rather than the easiest-looking button.
Recent residency histories and Quebec restricted applications can need extra documents. Resolve these before submission if possible.
The review takes as long as it needs
There is a minimum 28-day waiting period for applicants without a currently valid firearms licence. That does not mean the licence will arrive on day 28. Checks, incomplete information and further review can take longer.
Keep your confirmation. Follow the CFP’s instructions for checking status and responding to requests.
A worked example: from reports to a ready folder
AFTER CLASS
A learner prepares in the right order
They check that their reports are official, settle the application route using their licence history and identify any additional documents. Then they arrange the references, guarantor and photo. Finally, they check all information together before submitting and keep the confirmation securely.
Use the waiting time to understand ownership
Waiting does not have to mean refreshing a status screen every few minutes. Read about the responsibilities you will need if approved: the difference between licence and registration, the class of any firearm you are considering and the storage or transport requirements.
You can also contact a range or investigate hunting education to understand that activity’s requirements. Keep those enquiries distinct from claiming you already hold a licence. Ask what information or orientation will be needed later.
If the CFP requests information, respond through the official channel. The preparation provider cannot see the licensing review or make it progress faster. Keep the enquiry focused on the actual request or status instructions.
After approval: read before acting
Check the class privileges, conditions and expiry on the issued licence. Before acquiring a firearm, understand its current classification, transfer rules, registration and storage requirements.
