09 / AFTER APPROVAL

The card is a milestone. The responsibilities continue.

Read the conditions, plan the activity and keep your documents and licence information current.

01 / AFTER YOUR LICENCE

Read the licence and its conditions

Check your name, expiry date and approved firearm privileges. Keep the accompanying conditions with the licence as instructed. If something is wrong, contact the CFP before relying on it.

You can hold a licence without buying a firearm. Take time to understand the responsibilities and the rules for your intended activity.

02 / AFTER YOUR LICENCE

Your first week as a licence holder

Start by reading the licence rather than immediately looking for a purchase. Check the approved classes and expiry date, and keep the conditions supplied with it. If the information differs from what you expected, clarify it before relying on the card.

Next, revisit the activity you originally planned. Hunting, a range membership and a firearm acquisition each have their own requirements. Knowing which one you are preparing for helps you arrange the right documents and responsibilities in a sensible order.

IN CONTEXT

The licence is a milestone, not the whole activity

Plan the range’s access requirements, any hunting permissions, and the rules for a particular firearm before making assumptions about what you can do next.

03 / AFTER YOUR LICENCE

Permission comes in layers

  1. Your licence

Does it authorize the relevant firearm class, and is it valid?

  2. The firearm

Is the exact firearm currently lawful for your situation, and does it need registration?

  3. The transfer

Can it legally be transferred, and have the required verification and approvals occurred?

  4. Storage, use and transport

Do your location, equipment, activity and journey meet the applicable rules?

04 / AFTER YOUR LICENCE

Licence and registration are not the same

The licence concerns you. A registration certificate concerns a particular firearm. Restricted and prohibited firearms require federal registration. Quebec also has provincial registration requirements for non-restricted firearms.

Non-restricted transfers still require licence verification and a reference number under the federal process. The absence of a federal non-restricted registration certificate does not mean there are no transfer rules.

05 / AFTER YOUR LICENCE

Hunting and range use need their own planning

A PAL alone is not a hunting licence. Check your provincial or territorial hunter education, licences, tags, species, seasons and other rules. Ontario’s system, for example, separately requires hunting accreditation and licensing.

For a range, ask about approved activities, supervision, membership and local orientation. Do not assume the safety course grants automatic range access.

06 / AFTER YOUR LICENCE

Keep the licence current

A PAL is generally valid for five years. Start renewal before expiry and keep your contact information current with the CFP. Notify the CFP within 30 days of an address change. Moving can also affect restricted-firearm transport requirements.

If a licence has expired or is otherwise invalid, the online renewal route does not apply in the usual way. Ask the CFP for the correct process rather than assuming you can continue as before.

07 / AFTER YOUR LICENCE

Keep the documents organized by what they authorize

Documents about the person

The PAL identifies the individual’s approved privileges and validity. Course reports record the training requirement. Neither document is a registration certificate for a particular firearm.

Keep secure copies and know how to contact the CFP if something changes. Personal records should not be shared in public to ask a general question.

08 / AFTER YOUR LICENCE

Create a routine for the less exciting responsibilities

Renewal and address changes are easy to postpone because they are not part of the excitement of learning something new. Put the expiry date somewhere you will see it in advance, and keep your contact details current so official messages can reach you.

If you move, think about both updating the address and the transport arrangements for any restricted firearm. If a licence expires, seek the correct instructions rather than assuming a renewal request lets you continue as if nothing changed.
