Renewal has its own application route
PALs are renewed every five years. Renewal is a different task from applying for a first licence or adding privileges. Start with your current licence status and expiry date so you do not choose a form just because it is the first one found in a search.
The CFP says it sends renewal notices three months before expiry. Keep your own reminder as well, and leave room for document preparation. A reminder should prompt you to review the current process; it is not evidence that a renewal has already been submitted or approved.
Check the route before assembling documents
| Situation | What to check |
|---|---|
| Current valid adult licence | Whether you qualify for the online renewal service |
| Paper renewal | Use the renewal application, RCMP 5614 |
| Expired or invalid licence | The RCMP excludes this from ordinary online renewal; confirm your route |
| Minor’s licence | Use the age-appropriate process, including the adult PAL transition |
If your circumstances do not fit the ordinary route, resolve the route first. Preparing a perfect photo for the wrong application still leaves the main question unanswered.
Get the materials together
The renewal guidance lists licence and identity information, a digital photo, payment details and applicable current and recent former partner information. Check the actual fields before you start entering information so you can gather missing details calmly.
Make a short preparation list with an owner and a next action for each task: photo, contact information, payment and application access. Keep sensitive information in your own records. You do not need to share it with a study app to prepare your learning or administrative plan.
Do not automatically reuse the old picture
A renewal photo must meet the current photo specifications and reflect how you look now. An image from your original application may be too old even if the file is easy to find. The RCMP notes that a photo-guarantor signature is not required for renewal.
Open the file you intend to send and review its properties, appearance and date. If you are applying on paper, check the print and current form instructions. Review the PAL photo guide →
Keep a record after submitting
Keep the confirmation or a copy of the paper application and note when it was sent. If you check the application status, use the official service and have the identifying information requested for your route. Separate submission, processing and issuance in your notes.
If the licence is close to expiry or already expired, ask the CFP about the actual status and what applies to your circumstances. Do not use someone else’s processing time as permission to assume your own renewal has taken effect. The ownership responsibilities guide → is a useful place to review the broader obligations.
Renewal questions
Is Form 5592 the standard renewal form?
No. The RCMP identifies Form 5614 for paper renewal. Form 5592 serves other adult application situations. Choose using your actual licence history.
Can everyone renew online?
No. The RCMP lists exclusions including invalid or expired licences, minor’s licences, an existing renewal in progress and a religious photo exemption.
Will a reminder renew my licence?
No. You still need to complete the appropriate renewal process. Treat the notice as a prompt to act, not an approval.
