02 / NON-RESTRICTED
CFSC introduces the safety knowledge. A later application and review lead to the PAL. Keep those milestones separate.
01 / PAL
A PAL is the federal Possession and Acquisition Licence. A licence with non-restricted privileges covers firearms legally in that class, subject to its conditions and other laws.
You do not need to buy a firearm to apply. The course is introductory: unfamiliar terminology is expected. Your starting point is learning safe responsibilities, not demonstrating previous shooting experience.
02 / PAL
Many people encounter PAL while thinking about hunting or visiting a range. The licence is only one part of either activity. It concerns the person and the firearm privileges they have been approved to hold; it does not reserve a course place, grant a hunting tag or enroll someone in a club.
Start by separating the things you can plan now from the things that require approval later. You can research instructors, learn the terms, ask about accessibility and budget for the application. You should not treat those planning steps as permission to possess a firearm independently.

There is no need to choose or purchase equipment before you understand the training and licensing route. An introductory course is a sensible place to build that understanding.
03 / PAL
Take CFSC and pass the written and practical examinations.
Ask the instructor how and when your official reports will be provided.
Include the required information, photo, training evidence, contacts and fee.
A class certificate or submitted application is not an issued PAL.

Check that range’s orientation, supervision and membership policies. A PAL does not promise access to every range.
Complete additional CRFSC training and apply for restricted privileges.

It is a federal licence, but local laws, hunting rules, firearm classifications and licence conditions still matter. Moving also means updating your address with the Canadian Firearms Program.
The adult PAL is for people aged 18 and over. Ages 12–17 normally use the separate Minor’s Licence route. Read the age and eligibility guide.
A PAL is generally valid for five years. Renew before expiry; do not treat a submitted renewal as permission to ignore expiry or licence conditions.
Ownership and possession are different. Borrowing still involves the relevant licence, class and conditions, unless a specific supervision exception applies. Check with the CFP for your situation.

NON-RESTRICTED PATH
A new adult learner books CFSC after checking the instructor’s approval and full price. They attend the teaching, complete the written and practical tests, then ask when the official reports will arrive. They use that time to arrange contacts and a compliant photo rather than assuming the class has already licensed them.
No. CFSC results show you passed the training assessment. A PAL is issued only after the separate application and licensing review. The course report belongs in your application folder, not in place of the licence.

First understand your licence path. Next understand the current legal class of any firearm you might acquire. Then plan compliant storage and any transport requirements for that class. This order avoids buying something based on a nickname, an old advertisement or someone else’s licence.
Think about your circumstances too: shared accommodation, moving home, travel to a range and how you will keep your contact details current. These are reasons to ask precise questions, not reasons to guess at the rules.
09 / PAL
Being ready to book does not mean being an expert. It means knowing which course you want, having enough time to attend the whole booking and knowing which practical arrangements to confirm. A credible provider should explain these clearly.
If you have a question about eligibility, prior training or a past licence, resolve it with the CFP or CFO. The instructor can explain course arrangements but cannot promise that the government will issue a licence.
