PALPossession and Acquisition Licence
The federal licence for an individual, with approved firearm privileges. Learn more
RPALPAL with restricted privileges
Common shorthand, rather than a separate official licence name. Learn more
CFSCCanadian Firearms Safety Course
The non-restricted safety training foundation. Learn more
CRFSCCanadian Restricted Firearms Safety Course
Additional restricted safety training after CFSC. Learn more
CFPCanadian Firearms Program
The RCMP program administering federal firearms licensing and registration. Learn more
CFOChief Firearms Officer
The provincial or territorial licensing authority contact for approvals, conditions and particular circumstances. Learn more
ATTAuthorization to Transport
Authorization for specified restricted or prohibited firearm trips. Different from carry permission. Learn more
ATCAuthorization to Carry
Separate, limited carry authorization. It is not granted automatically by an RPAL. Learn more
RegistrationA record for a firearm
Different from the licence for a person. Learn more
ReferenceAn application contact
An adult who meets the application’s criteria and knows the applicant. Learn more
Photo guarantorSomeone who identifies your photo
A separate role with different acquaintance requirements from a reference. Learn more
Conjugal partnerSpouse, common-law or similar partner
The application asks about current and applicable former partners. Learn more
POL / FACOlder licence or acquisition documents
Previous possession-only licences and firearms acquisition certificates affect whether you count as a first-time online applicant. Learn more
